Le Petit Chef Rijswijk: Classic French Bistro with an Creative Twist

There’s something magical about stumbling into a restaurant that transports you instantly to another place. Le Petit Chef Rijswijk did exactly that for me. Tucked on the corner of Kerklaan and Emmastraat in the charming old town of Rijswijk, this intimate French bistro has all the hallmarks of a Parisian gem—the elegant decor, the warm lighting, the palpable sense of care in every detail. Walking through its doors, I genuinely felt as though I’d stepped onto a quiet Paris street, rather than a Dutch neighborhood.

Where Wine and Food Dance Together

Le Petit Chef is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner—but it’s the attention to detail that sets it apart. One charming touch I loved: the staff wear cute shirts embroidered with croissants on the back. It’s these small gestures that reinforce the bistro’s authentic French spirit.

The menu celebrates classic French cuisine, but the chef isn’t afraid to play—drawing inspiration from other traditions to create unique, unexpected flavor combinations. During my visit, I sampled several dishes designed for sharing, and each one showcased hallmarks of French cooking done well: a luscious base of butter and cream, fresh herbs used with confidence, and a thoughtful pairing of wine with food. The presentation was impeccable—both the savory dishes and desserts arrived looking like works of art.

The Only Stumble: Overly Sweet Desserts

If there’s a critique, it’s this: the desserts (I tried the Tarte Tatin and Dessert Aux Figues) leaned heavily toward the sweet side. For my palate, they were a touch too sugary. That said, taste is wonderfully subjective—what felt overly sweet to me might be just right for someone else. It’s a minor note in an otherwise excellent evening.

Would I Go Back? Absolutely.

Le Petit Chef Rijswijk is exactly what a neighborhood French bistro should be: unpretentious, skillfully executed, and genuinely welcoming. It’s the kind of place you want to return to again and again—for an intimate dinner, a leisurely lunch, or even just a croissant and coffee. The chef’s willingness to honor tradition while adding their own creative voice makes every dish worth savoring.

If you find yourself in Rijswijk or passing through the area, do yourself a favor: make a reservation at Le Petit Chef. Bring someone you enjoy lingering over a meal with, order a wine pairing, and let the chef take you on a journey through French flavors with a modern twist. You won’t regret it.

Vegetarian options are generously represented on the menu, which I appreciated. And the staff are genuinely knowledgeable about wine pairings—if you’re unsure which bottle complements your dish, they’ll guide you thoughtfully.
